Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall Release Notes

Effective April 2009, the Barracuda Spam Firewall has been renamed to the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall. The name change reflects Barracuda Networks' emphasis over the years on its anti-virus technology which is purpose-built to block email and Web threats. Unlike desktop anti-virus engines retrofitted for gateway use, the Barracuda Networks anti-virus technology is specifically designed for rapid response, prioritization of threats that propagate quickly, and a low false positive rate. While the product name has changed, customers should still expect the same protection, ease-of-use, and value from the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall.

PLEASE READ BEFORE UPGRADING TO VERSION 4.0

*Before upgrading, be sure to make a backup of your configuration and read all release notes that apply to versions more recent than the one currently running on your system.
*Before upgrading, BE SURE TO TAKE THE BARRACUDA SPAM & VIRUS FIREWALL OFFLINE. This will ensure that the inbound queue is emptied and all messages are scanned before the upgrade process begins. See the BASIC > Administration page for the Offline button.
* DO NOT MANUALLY REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM at any time during an upgrade, unless otherwise instructed by Technical Support.
* When upgrading to version 4.0, your Bayesian Analysis configuration will be reset and turned off (see the BASIC > Spam Checking page) and you must start with a new dataset of at least 200 received messages marked as "spam" and at least 200 marked as "not spam". As with previous versions, Bayesian filtering will NOT take effect until 200 or more of each spam and not-spam messages are marked as such on the BASIC > Message Log page.
* Due to some back-end changes in the system for 4.0, in the "Domain Configuration" section of the BASIC > IP configuration page, you will initially need to re-enter your "Accepted Email Recipient Domain(s)" on the BASIC > IP configuration page. Though they will not initially appear on the BASIC > IP configuration page, they will still appear on the DOMAINS page.

NEW TO VERSION 4.0

*Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall Product Activation - Prior to initial use, you must first activate your Energize Updates subscription. Your Energize Updates subscription includes both ongoing Spam, virus, firmware and security updates and access to Technical Support. To activate your Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall subscription:
1.Using your Web browser, go to the BASIC > Status page.
2.In the Subscription Status section, check the Energize Updates entry. If Energize Updates is Not Activated, click the activation link to be redirected to the Barracuda Networks Product Activation page. Complete activation of your subscription(s). If it is connected to the Internet, your Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall automatically updates its activation status after you reload the browser page when viewing the BASIC > Status page. If your network firewall prevents your Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall from updating its activation status automatically, you can manually enter the activation code provided after completing the details on the Barracuda Networks Product Activation page.
*Role-based administration (models 300 and higher) - In addition to the Administrator account role, which includes permissions to configure global settings on the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall, and the User account role, two new account roles with associated levels of permissions are available:
*Helpdesk - includes User level permissions (modifying individual settings for quarantine, spam, password and allow/block email addresses) plus limited ability to view and edit user account settings per domain and to view status, Message Log and reports for the Barracuda
*Domain Admin (models 600 and higher) - Same as above roles plus limited per-domain configuration of BASIC tab settings, Single Sign-on, LDAP and Recipient settings as well as specifying destination mail server and testing the SMTP connection
*Per-domain reports (models 300 and higher) - From the DOMAINS tab, the "Manage Domain" link for each domain configured on the appliance provides a BASIC > Reports page with the same reports (per-domain) as are available from the main BASIC > Reports page.
*The Syslog, which includes data related to mail flow, gives the month, day and time of each event for all models except for the model 1000, which also includes the year in the date.
*SNMP alerting - From the BASIC > Administration page, administrators can configure IP addresses which are allowed to access the Barracuda via SNMP queries to retrieve error information.
*Quarantine Summary Enhancements -
*New layout for quarantine notifications
*Ability to delete all new quarantine emails from the quarantine summary
*If there are more than 150 new quarantine messages (for the day), only the newest quarantined messages will be listed in the quarantine summary
*New Barracuda Web UI and Layout - Animated tabs allow the user to hover the mouse over the tab to see the page titles available without clicking on the tab.
*Force TLS - Ability to require incoming/outgoing messages to and from domains to use a TLS connection to send/receive messages.
*New Single Sign-on behavior - SSO is now a per-domain setting instead of a global setting. If you are upgrading to version 4.0 from an earlier version, you must configure SSO at the domain level. On the DOMAINS > USERS > Single Sign-on page, enter all of your SSO authentication settings, and use the DOMAINS > USERS > LDAP Configuration page if you're using LDAP. Realms are no longer used by the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall, so users must log in with their fully qualified domain name.
*New 'Retry' button - For mail that is waiting in the Out queue, clicking the Retry button on the BASIC > Administration page initiates the process to retry sending the messages immediately.
*New version 4.x of the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall API for remote administration of the system using XML-RPC requests. Version 4.0 of the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall firmware will recognize calls from the version 3.x API, but future versions will not, so moving to the new version 4.x API is recommended. Please see the Barracuda Support Web site for the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall API Guide 4.x.
