- *Feature: Body block/accept/quarantine/tag patterns (regular expressions) are now validated before being applied. Testing is now performed to attempt to detect an erroneous pattern that could block all email.
- *Feature: A new external blacklist, xbl.spamhaus.org, has been added to the "BLOCK/ACCEPT->External Blacklists configuration screen. Use of this list is highly recommended and there have no reports of false-positives when using this service. NOTE: THIS BLACKLIST WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY ACTIVATED IF YOU WERE ALREADY USING sbl.spamhaus.org. For more information, please visit http://www.spamhaus.org/xbl/index.lasso.
- *Feature: Message log search by score is now available. One may search by a specific score (enter "1" to view messages scored between 1.0 and 1.9). It is also possible to perform a greater-than or less-than search (i.e. all messages with a score over 9 or all messages with a score under 3). This is very useful when searching for messages to classify as spam or non-spam when attempting to train the Barracuda spam learning algorithm.
- *Feature: The number of messages that have been classified as "Spam" or "Not Spam" are now displayed in the message log view. IMPORTANT NOTES: 1) Spam classification will not have any effect until at least 200 of each, "Spam" and "Not Spam", messages have been classified. 2) Spam classification is most effective if there are at least as many messages classified as "Not Spam" as there are classified as "Spam". 3) The reported number of classified messages may take several minutes to update when new messages have been classified. 4) The initial number of classified messages reported after updating firmware may be inaccurate - one should still attempt to bring both of those numbers over 200.

- *Lists of subject/body filters as well as attachment types are now alphabetized for easier navigation (issue #738).
- *Resolved issue where whitelisting of senders was still not superceding subject/body filters.
- *Navigation menus have been reorganized into three categories in order to increase ease of use:
- *"BASIC" contains essential controls to manage spam, as well as status monitoring tools.
- *"BLOCK/ACCEPT" contains all blacklisting/whitelisting/filtering rules.
- *"ADVANCED" contains tools for advanced protocol configuration as well as Energize/firmware updates.
- *A help subsystem has been added to your Barracuda Spam Firewall. By clicking on the question mark (?) on the upper, right-hand corner of any configuration section, one is now able to read documentation specific to that section.
- *The Barracuda Spam Firewall now supports "Bayesian" learning, the most advanced method available to teach the Spam Firewall what you consider to be spam and what you don't. To use this feature, simply go to the "BASIC"->"Message Log" screen and use the buttons on the left-hand side to classify as many messages as possible. Note that it is just as important to properly classify non-spam messages as it is to classify spam. Once you have categorized as many messages as possible in a message log screen, press the "Submit" button where it says "Spam Classification'.The Bayesian database on your Barracuda Spam Firewall may take some time to become "trained", but the results are extraordinary once it is!
- *As of version 1.8.0, firmware update will now be a two step process. The user may begin the download, which is the longer part of the process, without rendering the administrative interface unavailable. Download progress is reported in the firmware update screen, and may be canceled at any time.Once the download is complete, the user may apply the firmware at any time. The application only causes one to two minutes of interruption while the Barracuda resets.
- *Messages headers and body can now be reviewed from the message log to assist in spam classification for Bayesian learning.
- *New configuration screen available: "ADVANCED"->"Privacy". From this screen, one can enable or disable the ability to view the entire message body in the message log detail window.
- *Resolved but that caused firmware/Energize updates to time out behind certain firewalls (most notably SonicWall).
- *Resolved bug that would cause subject/body filters to block whitelisted messages (issue #700).
- *Resolved bug that caused the message log to display "Blocked" status when the message had, in fact, been delivered with nonfatal protocol errors.
- *Spam score is now displayed in a separate column of the message log.
- *New virus definitions, as well as the complete virus list are now listed in the release notes of the "Definition Updates" screen.
- *Viruses in .zip files are now detected
- *Configuration option was added to "Virus Checking" screen to enable/disable virus sender notification.
- *A bug was fixed that may have prevented proper notification of intended virus recipients.
- *The timestamp for latest firmware / spam definition / virus definition is now available through "Update" web interface.
- *Release notes for latest firmware are now available through "Update" web interface.
- *"Domain Block/Accept" tab is now "Sender Domain Block/Accept", and interface functions as expected. This feature was misleading because it attempted to block or accept on a domain name based on the reverse DNS lookup. The new version correctly looks at the sender's "From" address to determine if message should be allowed or blocked.
- *"Header Filtering" changed to "Subject Filtering" and only works accordingly.
- *Whitelisting of message can now be performed via keyword in message subject or body.
- *Support for the premium feature, "MS Exchange Accelerator", was added to improve MS Exchange server performance by not accepting messages to unknown recipients. Denial of service and dictionary attacks were frequently crippling MS Exchange servers because the MS Exchange server is designed to accept all messages, even to invalid users, and generate a subsequent bounce (or NDR - non-delivery receipt).
- *Provided better documentation of regular expression syntax for keyword matching in message subject/body.
- *Prevented tagging of messages a second time when a Barracuda Spam Firewall receives an already tagged message.
- *Resolved bug that caused the block/tag/quarantine selection of a blacklist item to change when an item above it was deleted (issue #678).
- *Resolved bug that caused statistics to display incorrectly during the periodic flush to disk (issue #675)
- *Paging is now available in the message log display
